The denim protocol
— A standard tip from denim heads is never to wash your denim. Very hardcore, and a bit grimy. You do want to wash your jeans every so often. Dirt, sweat and general wear aren't doing the fibres any favours either.
— That said, wash as seldom as necessary to preserve colour and fit. If you prefer a more washed-and-worn look, you can of course wash more often, but it will come at the expense of its longevity.
— Wash your denim inside out to reduce fading and wear.
— And while you're at it, make sure everything is zipped and buttoned up as well.
— 30°C works well – it's enough for an ordinary wash. The mechanical action, together with the detergent, helps disrupt bacterial cell membranes and the outer structures of viruses. Higher temperatures generally mean more fading, more shrinkage and more stress on the fibres.
— The detergent matters too. Mild surfactants will do the cleaning without subjecting the cotton to unnecessarily aggressive chemistry. Over time, harsh alkaline or oxidising detergents can degrade the cellulose structure and weaken the fabric. Denim doesn't need that sort of treatment.
— Raw denim bleeds excess dye onto other clothes, shoes and furniture. That's to be expected. Strictly speaking, raw denim starts becoming something else the moment you wash it. If you want to preserve its character for as long as possible, you can start by soaking it in cold water to shed some of the excess dye. When it eventually needs a proper wash, a gentle denim detergent won't wreck the overall look – and will make your jeans considerably nicer to live with.
— Tumble drying will soften denim, but heat and tumbling can also accelerate shrinkage, fading and wear.
— If you're set on conserving fit and colour, let your denim air dry. It's better for the environment too.
Good luck!
